Tonight we will continue to part 2 yeahhhhhhhh !!!! π
RIBOSOMES
Baggage handling system |
- Location: The ribosomes in cells are located in both plant and animal cells. They can be located either attached to the Endoplasmic Reticulum, or floating in the cytoplasm.
- Function: The function of the ribosomes in a cell is to build proteins, as well as structure them. Also, they catalyze the synthesis of the cells proteins.
- Analogy: The baggage handling system in an airport is much like the ribosomes in a cell. Ribosomes serve as the assembly site for proteins, so essentially they create the proteins for the cell. The baggage handling system in an airport serves as a place for people to load all of their baggage. Then, it is assembled in a way that everyone's baggage can fit on to the plane. It serves as an assembly site for all of the luggage
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
Waiting areas |
- Location: The Endoplasmic Reticulum is between the nucleus and the Golgi apparatus and it is in both plant and animal cells.
- Function: It is mainly responsible for the transportation of proteins and other carbohydrates to another organelle, which includes lysosomes, Golgi apparatus, plasma membrane,.
- The waiting areas in the airport are kind of like the Endoplasmic Reticulum in the cell. The purpose of the Endoplasmic Reticulum is like a place that transit the protein to Golgi Apparatus. The reason that waiting areas are like the Endoplasmic Reticulum is because it is like a place that transit passenger to another area like boarding area in an airport.
GOLGI APPARATUS
Boarding |
- Location: The Golgi Apparatus is located next to the Endoplasmic Reticulum and near the nucleus in the cytoplasm. This organelle is found in both animal and plant cells.
- Function: The main function of the Golgi apparatus is to sort out the proteins and package them to ready them for secretion. The Golgi also helps transport lipids.
- Analogy: in this analogy boarding the airplane in an airport is similar to the function of the Golgi Apparatus in a cell. The Golgi Apparatus receives new proteins and lipids from the Endoplasmic Reticulum and then redistributes them throughout the cell. It modifies the proteins chemically and then "repackages" them. When you board the plane from the airport you get assigned to different sections of the airplane, and then the flight takes you to your destination. Once you leave the flight, everyone gets "redistributed" throughout the new airport. This process is similar to what happens to the new proteins and lipids.
VACOULE
Restaurant/Coffee Shop |
- Location: There are numerous vacuoles located throughout the cytoplasm of plant and animal cells.
- Function: Vacuoles provide structural support, storage of pigment and nutrient, waste disposal, help in growth, and maintain turgor pressure.
- Analogy: In this analogy, the vacuole would be classified as the restaurant/ coffee shop in airport because both store water, food nutrient and disposal waste products.
CHLOROPLAST
Solar Panel |
- Location: Chloroplasts can be found anywhere within the cytoplasm of plant cells.
- Function: The chloroplasts in a plant cell absorbs sunlight to produce ATP and make photosynthesis.
- Analogy: The chloroplast in this analogy would serve as the solar panels of airport because they capture, and then convert and provide energy for their cell or airport.
MITOCHONDRIA
Generator |
- Location: The Mitochondria of a cell is located in both plant and animal cells. They are found floating throughout the cell.
- Function: The most important function of the mitochondria is to produce energy and supply energy for the cell.
- Analogy: We would consider the generator the “mitochondria” of the airport, because the generator would use natural resources such as fuel to produce energy and supply it to the airport similar to mitochondria produce and supply energy.
CENTRIOLE
Airport express train |
- Location: The centriole is found at either ends of a cell that are dividing. This organelle is only found in only animal cells.
- Function: The function of centrioles is mainly to help separate cells during mitosis, but also helps with cellular organization, and animal development.
- Analogy: In this analogy the centrioles would serve as the airport express train. Centrioles are found in animal cells and they are responsible for helping to separate chromosomes during cell division because the express train separates the airport from outside (division). It is the same with cells, the centrioles divide the cell into different parts.
LYSOSOME AND PEROXISEM
Janitors |
Peroxisome |
Lysosome |
- · Location: Lysosomes and Peroxisomes are scattered throughout the cell, and are found in both animal and plant cell.
- · Function: Lysosomes and Peroxisomes digest ingested materials and worn out organelles and also kill dangerous things that get into its cell. Lysosomes and Peroxisomes can also fuse with vesicles formed by endocytosis, digesting the food particles within.
- · Analogy: Lysosomes and Peroxisomes in the cell have a lot of the same functions as janitors do in airports. Lysosomes and Peroxisomes contain digestive enzymes that remove all of the excess from the cell, like food particles, invading viruses or bacteria, and worn out cell parts. Janitors in the airport are in charge of cleaning up all of the extra trash throughout the building. This keeps the airport clean, just as the lysosomes and peroxisomes keep the cell in good shape.
VESICLE
Tugs |
Vesicle |
- · Location: A vesicle is a small structure within a cell, consisting of fluid enclosed by a lipid bilayer. It can be found in both animal and plant cell
- · Function: Many vesicles transport substance from one organelle to another.
- · Analogy: Tugs or pushback tractors are special low profile vehicles that push the plane around. Tugs are used because although many aircraft are capable of moving themselves backwards on the ground using reverse thrust, the resulting jet blast may cause damage to the terminal building or equipment. Engines close to the ground may also blow sand and debris forward and then suck it into the engine, causing damage to the engine. A pushback is therefore the preferred method to move the aircraft away from the gate. The reason why the tug is a good analogy for the vesicles is because they move things around. The tug moves the planes around at the airport and the vesicles move proteins around the cell.
